One Thing About The Groon…
The Groon first sprouted while Jay E Moores was setting up a recording studio in an old farmhouse in Camden. He cranked up his electric guitar, fired up the drums, and sang stream of consciousness gibberish that turned into the 8-song album, Groon Radio. Tracks such as “Groonage Daydream” and “It’s Not Easy Being Groon” were rough, but full of energy, they could not help but spark more.
By the second album, Son of a Groon, a story began to take shape in Jay’s prolific songwriting. Characters sang their own points of view. The Groon was in bloom! Hazel de Mesa jumped on board, adding bass guitar, keyboards, and multi-track backing vocals. More musicians added their touches to the songs. The album launched on Halloween 2024. They debuted three of the songs at the open mic at the Bazz on New Year’s Eve. The project comes full circle as the entire musical premieres on the very same stage before the year is done.
What started as a silly bop has evolved into a show about outsiders and misfits finding their place in the sun. Somehow they’ve attracted the perfect cast and crew. Lives were changed during the course of this journey. They are a diverse group of people from all over the world resonating to the tunes of the Groon, and finding love and friendship as a reward.
“Now I like who I am. I like who I am. I can be my own friend. Reach out, hold my hand.”

Alan Cohen (Papa Groon/Frank/Dr. Froelich) last appeared at the Bazz in “Big Fish, the Musical” in 2023 along with director Hazel de Mesa. Moved to Winterport in 2020 and planted American Chestnut and fruit trees. He volunteers for WERU creating Front Porch Folk on Tuesday mornings and sings with Shape Note groups. Alan formerly worked at the US EPA and believes that the CDC is full of good and decent people protecting our nation’s health. It is tragic to see RFK Jr. destroy this excellent group of dedicated scientists. Vaccines protect us and do NOT cuase autism. “Make America Smart Again.”
John Conway (The Groon) got roped into being the Groon after being recommended by three different people to Hazel and Jay. His thespian journey all started at Frank’s potluck. Follow him on Facebook to see him do more cool stuff. Make sure you never pass up a good potluck!
Hazel de Mesa (Producer/Director/Music Director/Myrna) wore a lot of hats and knitted a few more in this production. She first set foot on the Maskers stage as The Witch in Big Fish after a long hiatus from the theater while she played her favorite role of Mom to Malaya. She enjoys playing music with her husband, Jay E Moores, and is thrilled to share some of it with you tonight! Listen to her music at demesa.com 🎶
Angela Domenichelli (Janie) OMG, like, I cannot believe I am playing a Valley Girl again after, like, an undisclosed number of decades! I have been seen on stage belting out songs as Sister Mary Hubert (Midcoast Actors Studio) and was most recently on the Masker’s stage in a dual role as Cedric and Mister Voldy in the Puffs. I am absolutely super stoked to be back in the Bazz for this original, quirky, half-man/half-broccoli show. I’m just, like, trying to remember where I put my scrunchies!
Mariia Dueitt (Mama Groon/FDA Agent/Scientist), former secretary of the Mykolaiv Regional Puppet Theater in Ukraine, always wanted to try herself as an actress.
Tyson Hoffman (Lighting Designer) has always loved all things technology, and really enjoys theater. He debuted at the Maskers in “Playboy of the Western World” as an actor, and picked up lighting this year, illuminating Lumberjacks and Wood Nymphs in “If a Tree Falls,” wizards and mug-borns in “Puffs,” and will be doing his first vegetable oriented lighting in The Groon Show.
Ember Hoffman (Babysitter/Quarter Groon) loves theater and has dragged their parents along with them, starring with their dad and Eden in “Playboy of the Western World” and their mom in “Puffs”. Their parents said they are what they eat, and so felt obligated to perform as part broccoli in The Groon Show. In their spare time they enjoy needle felting and reading.
Eden Hoffman (Eighth Groon) has been in several acting workshops, and their first performance was last year’s “Playboy of the Western World”, where they worked hard to learn an Irish accent. They are going to be playing a vegetable for the first time in The Groon Show. When offstage Eden likes to read, make art and snuggle their three adorable cats.
Leo Hoffman (Lil Earl) will be making his first ever stage performance in The Groon Show. He’s full of energy and passion, and hopefully follows a director’s instructions better than he does his parents.
Daria Kovshova (Bass Player/Sheriff/Uncle Lou/Half-Groon) is a theatre kid from Ukraine and your future nurse.
Ivy Lobato (Stage Manager/Dorothy) is delighted to be part of this very fun(ny) show. She has always loved live theater whether on or backstage. It helps her keep her sanity in this crazy and insane world. She thanks you, our beloved audience, for your support and wishes us all peace, love, and justice.
Jay E Moores (Songwriter/Big Earl) lives in Maine and makes media of various sorts because the internet is fun. Jay’s favorite things to do are drawing cartoons, writing songs, animation, game development, toy design, music production, AI art, and video editing. The modern age can be very exciting. Maybe a little too exciting. I sit at a computer more than I should. Theater gets me away from the monitor so I can shake my booty. Visit WigglyLoaf.com for a glimpse of what happens.
Patricia Saucier (Audio/Video Operator) has been with the Maskers since 2006 both on and backstage. Most recently seen as Myrtle/ Bippy in Puffs, she is excited to run the audio/video tech for The Groon Show. Patricia would like to thank you for supporting Community Theatre.
Gwen Sauvage (Judy Mae) is excited to join The Groon Show! She’s a local director and photographer who never turns down a good character role, especially one as wild and lovable as Judy Mae.

Dark Ride 25th Anniversary
On October of 2000 Jay E Moores and Mark Harvey of Rain Station released a Halloween party album (or music to bop along to while waiting in line at a haunted attraction). Jay made animations for each of the 13 songs at JackOLantern.org 🎃 Children of all ages grew up watching them year after year. Dark Ride by Rain Station is now a Halloween classic.
To celebrate 25 years of Dark Ride, Robert Whittington (FIDreams) created this animated tribute to kick off the season.
